‘Studying the form’ is crucial when it comes to placing your bets. Although ‘form’ is a term mainly used in horse racing, it is also used in a wide range of sports including soccer.

In this guide, I will cover what ‘form’ actually means and how it relates to soccer. Throughout the guides I have written for this website, I seem to have been banging the drum for you to do your research.

Well, here it comes again. Go over every detail of your bet with facts and figures relating to each game. It might seem like a slog at first, but if you are wanting to be successful then you will need to put in some work.

What Is Soccer Form?

Form when it comes to soccer betting is all about their recent performances on the field collectively and individually.

What I mean by that is, check out the recent results of the teams you are backing. Are they on a winning or losing streak, have they drawn the majority of their last five matches? All these things are relative when it comes to building your bets.

Checking out certain individuals is crucial as well. You might want to bet on the first goalscorer market. If a player has scored the opening goal in the last five matches, then you are probably going to bet on him and with good reason, as long as the odds are still favourable of course.

If a player has been out of the team for six or seven weeks and makes his return, more often than not he will start from the bench. There is no real advantage in backing him to score the opening goal because he might not be on the pitch when that happens. Backing that player to score at any time would be a better route to go down as he will get some minutes later on in the match.

Below is a brief table of the ‘form’ you should be looking out for before you place your soccer bets:

ResultsCheck out whether a team has won, lost or drawn their recent matches to see what bet is worth it.
Home & AwaySome teams are better away from home than they are in front of their own supporters. Check out their current form.
Head to HeadCheck out how a team has fared against its opponent in recent years. If a team hasn’t won away from home against a certain side for over 30 years, maybe consider backing against them for that game.
Team News / Player FormIf you are backing a player to be the first goal scorer, it would be wise to research his form and whether he has scored in recent weeks. The same with players coming back from injury, they will probably be on the bench so go with anytime scorer rather than first.
Management ChangesIf a manager has been sacked before a game at the weekend, I would seriously consider backing them to win. The amount of times a team with no boss wins their next game is staggering. It’s like the players have something to prove.
Style of PlayIf two teams are playing each other that rarely attack and are very defensive, then don’t back then in a goals market like BTTS. Be sensible and ‘study the form’.

What Are YOU Looking For In Terms Of Form?

When you are studying the form relating to placing soccer bets, it is important to focus on key areas that you think will happen in the game and whether or not there is any value in placing that bet.

If Player A has scored in his last five matches and he is part of a bet where he needs to have two or more shots on target – then you would seriously consider it.

However, if that part of the bet was coupled with Player B to have a shot on target from outside the area – and you know he rarely gets that far forward. You would need massive odds to even consider that, even then I would be cautious because you are being enticed by a bet that should happen and snatching at one that is more than likely not going to happen.

Be smart in what you study. Do not be persuaded by the big odds – yes we all want to land one – but by studying the form you should quickly figure out if a bet is worth it.

Where Can I Find Soccer Form?

As we all know, the internet is a remarkable thing. Whatever information you are looking for, you can almost guarantee you will find it online. I will break down the best places for you to find your ‘form’ ahead of placing your bets.

Betting Websites

This seems an obvious one. Most online bookmakers provide the relevant statistics that help support their offers and bets. If you are backing someone to score more than one goal, they will more often than not have some stats regarding his recent form. Other statistics including head-to-head results and recent team form can be found on these sites.

Social Media

You can use social media a bit like a club website. Clubs will use X to put some news out there that gets you to head over to the website, but the gist of the tweet will give you all the info you need. Pundits and experts will also give their opinions on certain matches, you can choose whether to follow or ignore their advice, but it is a good source to tap into.

Club Websites

For up to date team news and injury updates, you are best heading over to the official club website. All the news on there will be correct and not just hearsay. The sites will also have all the latest fixtures and results so you can check out the main stats ahead of each game.

Industry Websites/Channels

Big name brands like Sky Sports and BBC have 24 hour coverage online and on television. The majority of top-class soccer matches will be previewed and they will have the relevant news on each game, whether that is team news, head to head etc.

Stats-Based Websites

Two popular sites that will provide you with all the relevant stats, facts and figures for each game are ‘Soccerway’ and ‘Who Scored’. They have previews on any game you want to bet on. They will have a full analysis on each team and their recent form. Good sites to use for working out how many consecutive games a certain player has scored in.

Should I Always Back The Favourite?

If you have done all the relevant research when it comes to the bet you are placing, and everything like current form and head to head all point towards the favourite, then by all means back the favourite, But do not treat it as a given.

Every dog has its day. Even on occasions when all the facts and figures point in the direction of a certain team, there is still no guarantee that they will win the game.

You will have heard of the term ‘Cup Form’. What is cup form and is it really a thing or just another sporting myth? To be honest, I think it is a little bit of both. Yes, on paper a team in the Premier League should be beating a team from League Two. That should always happen, but this is where your research is crucial.

A team like Manchester City with all their top players should be bearing Bradford City every day of the week. But this is a cup game and you need to be 100% sure that City are fielding a strong team.

All their international players will probably be rested and there will be a mixture of youngsters in the team. We don’t yet know if those youngsters are Premier League or League Two level. Again, Man City should be winning but it is not a certainty.

Now not every lower league team will be a match to an under strengthened Premier League side, all their players should be better than League Two level, but the ‘Magic of the Cup’ does bring some clubs alive. Research into cup upsets shows around one in four FA Cup fourth-round matches end up with the underdog winning – it is just up to you to find that one.

Final Say On Studying The Form

Studying the form is a vital ingredient in getting the best out of your bets. Don’t just click on a team because they used to be good once.

Constantly check their recent results and team news. This will allow you to get a better handle on what could be a successful bet or a bet you should stay clear of.

Do not just back the favourite to win and do not blindly pick an underdog because the odds are tempting, you still have to believe the outcome has a bigger chance of happening than the markets suggest. It is vital to study any kind of form relating to your bet if you want any hope of being successful.
