You should know by now that sports and soccer betting does not just revolve around the winner between two teams in a certain match. If you have a thought about something random happening in a game, you can usually assume there will be a betting market for it.

The good thing about those ‘random’ thoughts is that they are not random at all. Bookmakers continue to come up with special markets to keep you interested. Some of us do not just want to bet on a result happening, we want excitement and enjoyment. Prop bets can bring you that.

In this guide I will cover all about prop bets and what they are and how you can utilise them in your betting slips.

What Are Prop Bets?

A prop bet was originally known as a proposition bet, but over time it has been shortened to just props. Bookmakers and fellow punters will know what you mean when you say prop bets’.

A prop bet can sometimes be seen as a novelty bet because it moves away from the normal betting method of backing Team A to beat Team B. In a prop bet, you are not necessarily betting on the outcome of a match, you are betting on something specific happening in the game.

Prop bets are very popular in the world of American Football, especially the NFL, but you can place prop bets in a wide range of sports including soccer, rugby league, rugby union, cricket, and boxing.

How Do Prop Bets Work?

It is vital to explain that all prop bets are separate from the outcome of the soccer match you are betting on. You are concentrating on a certain event or events to occur during that 90 minutes.

There are a number of different options when it comes to prop bets and I will briefly outline them below:

Player-Based Prop Bets

Player-based prop bets are very common in soccer. These kind of bets could feature just one player to score a certain amount of goals, or around a couple of players to have a combined number of shots on target.

The bets do not just have to revolve around goals or shots on targets. You can bet on a player making a certain number of fouls or to be carded, even how many clean tackles he makes. You can also bet on how many saves a goalkeeper makes in the game.

Here are some examples of player-based prop bets:

  • Player A To Have 2+ Shots On Target
  • Player B To Score A Header
  • Player A To Score 2+ Goals
  • Player A To Have 1+ Shots On Target & To Be Carded
  • Player A To Score, Player B To Have A Shot On Target & Both To Be Carded
  • Player C To Make 4+ Saves
  • Player A & Player B To Commit 2+ Fouls & Player C To Score Or Assist
  • Player A, B & C All To Be Carded
  • Player A To Score or Assist
  • Player A To Assist Player B & Player B To Assist Player A

Goal-Based Prop Bets

These kinds of bets are centered around the amount of goals scored in a game. Do not get confused with bets on ‘who’ will score the first goal. Those bets are player-based rather than specifically on the goals scored.

Once again, there are a few markets for this, ranging from the time of first goal, the first team to score or if one team will keep a clean sheet.

Here are some examples of some of the bets you can play around with.

  • First Team To Score
  • Clean Sheets
  • First Goal Time – 1-10
  • First Goal Time – 11-20
  • First Goal Time – 81-90
  • First Goal Time – No Goal
  • Team A To Score 2+ Goals

Other Prop Bets

I think you will get the gist by now, the terms used are very self-explanatory. Aside from the goals and player-based bets, you can bet on other markets that do not revolve around a team winning. These can be the total number of corners in a game, the number of corners each team are awarded or even how many booking points are accumulated inside 90 minutes or whether a player is sent off or not.

Again, here is a short list on what you could bet on:

  • Sending Off
  • Total Corners Over/Under 8.5
  • Team With Most Corners
  • First Player To Be Carded
  • A Penalty To Be Taken
  • A Penalty To Be Scored
  • A Penalty To Be Missed

Alternative Prop Bets

The alternative prop bets are not necessarily related to a specific match, they are more likely to be concentrating on events happening across the league. For instance, you could have a market for the next Premier League manager to be sacked or the next permanent Manchester United manager or even the destination of a certain player. It is important to keep checking these kinds of prop bets because they change all the time.

Craziest Prop Bet I have Seen

I have been working in the sports betting industry for quite a while now, and believe me you do get some strange offers lying around.

The majority of prop bets are not too crazy. They could be a combination of someone scoring and getting booked, or a number of players have 2+ shots on target. On occasion, there will be one that catches your eye and stays with you forever.

Back in 2013, global music sensation Seal was asked to perform before Game Two of the State of Origin series between New South Wales and Queensland at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney.

Now there were prop bets on which song he would sing first, but that is not unusual because they have markets like that every year for the Super Bowl. The best prop bet for Seal was you could bet on what colour nail polish he would be wearing during his performance.

That is out of the box thinking right there. The bookmakers picked up on the fact Seal likes to paint his nails and ran with the ball on that one.

Fun Prop Bets Versus Skilled Prop Bets

The majority of prop bets are meant to be fun, but with some there is still a level of skill involved to get the most out of each bet. Bets like ‘who will win the toss’ or ‘which end a team will be attacking in the first half’ are lighthearted bets that mainly rely on luck.

Other prop bets that cover the more statistical side of the game require more skill and research for those to pay out. The more clued up you are on certain teams and players with their form, the better your chances are of winning.

Of course, there needs to be an element of luck in that as well, but if you work out Player A has on average three shots on target per game and Player B commits 2+ fouls every game, it would make sense to construct a bet with those factors in it.

Final Say On Prop Bets

Prop bets are a great addition to whatever soccer match you are watching. Rather than just betting on the outcome of a game, add a bit of flavour to the action with goals, corners, tackles and even red or yellow cards.

They don’t have to be as vanilla as those bets, if you search around long enough you will find some hilarious prop bets that could end up winning you a good amount of money.

What you need to remember with prop bets is that they are supposed to be fun, but that doesn’t mean you cannot show off with your own knowledge. Use your research techniques to study specific players and try to get an advantage that way.

Prop Bets Pros And Cons

  • Fun and enjoyable
  • Huge variety of markets
  • Wording may be confusing
