Whether you are new to betting or you have been doing it for years, you will have heard of the term ‘Each Way Betting’.

Each Way Betting is more commonplace in horse racing, but it is used in other sports as well. In this guide I am going to explain how each way betting works and also how it relates to soccer.

Let’s dive straight in.

What Is An Each Way Bet?

An each way bet consists of two parts – Win and Place. For the purpose of this section I will use horse racing as an example and I will cover soccer later on in the article.

You are essentially backing your horse to win the race, but you have given yourself some added insurance if the horse finishes second or third (some bookmakers extend the number of places on the bigger races like the Grand National and Cheltenham Gold Cup).

The concept of an each way bet is that you can still claim a payout if the horse does not win the race, albeit with smaller odds as I will explain below.

How Does An Each Way Bet Work?

When placing an each way bet on horse racing, you are usually cheering on your horse to at least finish in the top three depending on the runners and riders. Yes, you want your horse to win, but a finish or place will ensure you get some money back.

When placing your bet each way, your stake is split in half. If you are betting £10, the bet will be £5 each way which equals to £10. The odds you receive will be paid out if the horse wins, but if the horse places then you will be paid normally ¼ or ⅕ of what the original odds were.

Horse 1 to win (E/W)10/1£10 (£5 E/W)£72.50£62.501/4£17.50£7.50

How To Calculate Your Each Way Winnings Bet

The main goal when it comes to any form of betting is to make some kind of profit. When you place an each way bet, you are hoping your selection wins but you have afforded yourself some extra insurance in case it does not.

You need to be careful when placing your each way bet. Do not automatically assume that you will receive a profit if the horse finishes in the top three. Remember the odds reduce dramatically if your selection does not win. So, the placed odds will be ¼, meaning anything less than a 4/1 bet on your original selection will result in a loss.

You can include multiple each way bets if you fancy that. This is very popular in the world of soccer. I have included a brief table on what your bet would look like if you backed last season’s football league winners in one bet.

To Win LeagueOdds (Before season started)Win/PlaceStakeReturnProfit
Man City to Premier League4/7Won
Burnley to win Championship14/1Won
Plymouth to win League One11/4Won
Leyton Orient to win League Two16/1Won

Each Way Betting In Soccer

My attention turns to soccer now. I only used horse racing as a brief example because it is the most popular form of each way betting.

In soccer each way betting is mainly used when it comes to predicting the winner of a tournament. In soccer a regular match sees only two possible winners, so there is no value at all in that sense. Backing a winner on a tournament before it has started is the most popular because the finishing places are easily worked out.

Using the FA Cup as an example, backing someone like Man City, Liverpool or Arsenal to lift the trophy at Wembley might not provide much value, but if you go with someone like Newcastle United or Aston Villa the odds will be slightly larger.

Most bookmakers will pay out half the original odds if your team makes the final but doesn’t win. In recent years some lesser names have made it to the final and won, so if you take a chance you could be quids in come May.

Here is a brief table on which bookmakers offer Each Way Betting and on which markets:

Each Way Betting Pros and Cons

Here are a few pros and cons for you to consider when using each way bets:

  • Make profit if selection does not win outright
  • Enhanced places paid out
  • Great pre-tournament odds
  • Low number of places on some bets
  • Low percentage return depending on odds

My Own Each Way Betting Nightmare

I have used each way betting in the past, probably not as much as I should have done because I still have flashbacks to a bet I made years ago. I cannot even remember if Each Way betting on the first goal scorer was a thing back then – I certainly wasn’t aware of it.

I was watching my team – Barnsley – take on Birmingham City and I had backed Craig Davies to open the scoring. He was our leading goal scorer at the time and I thought he would come out firing against his hometown club.

He kind of did, but it was too late. He did not score the first goal, but he did score goals two, three, four and five. I was gutted, if I had used Each Way Betting I would have had a successful bet.

If you are backing first goal scorers, make sure you have the Each Way option to avoid my mistake.

Final Say On Each Way Betting

Each Way Betting is more popular with horse racing than soccer, but that does not mean you cannot have fun with it.

A lot of punters use the Each Way Betting market when it comes to the Grand National and that is probably the best way to use it, because honestly a lot of people are betting for the one and only time of the year, so adding some extra insurance makes sense.
